It’s Groundhog Day!

Groundhog Day turns 30 this year. I try and watch it every year, and always think how much better it would have been if they’d cast Meg Ryan in the role of Rita. Don’t get me wrong, Andie MacDowell does have her charming moments, and obviously, most fans of Groundhog Day like her enough to buy the romance.I don’t want to provoke any fantasy casting fisticuffs, but I’d happily forgo Meg’s Golden Globe nominated performance in Sleepless in Seattle to see her opposite Bill Murray in Punxsatawney. Her beauty, talent, and star presence made her a slam dunk. If only they could have cloned mid-career Meg, á la Multiplicity. Still, I’ll always have 1991-1998, when every Meg Ryan movie was an event. Meg’s mystique was the product of a special time. It simply cannot be replicated. Watching her perform is a joy. She was unique. Maybe I should content myself with her greatness, rather than dream of her duplication.
